Texas Biennial, 2011
(Dallas, TX): The Free Museum of Dallas is pleased to announce the opening of Illustrations for Our Afflicted Powers, on Friday, April 29th, from 5-7pm. The exhibition will be on view until May 27th.
The artists participating in this project include Matt Cusick, Tuba Öztekin Köymen, Michelle Mackey, Anna Membrino, Savannah Niles, Ahn-Thuy Nguyen, Laray Polk, Tiana Wages and Sally Warren. Their artworks are inspired by passages selected from either of two publications: Afflicted Powers: Capital and Spectacle in a New Age of War, or Empire of Illusion: The End of Literacy and the Triumph of Spectacle.*
These publications present powerful critiques of US society and foreign policy in the wake of the events of September 11, 2001. Through their imaginative and often oblique response to the analyses presented in these books, these Texas artists demonstrate the many ways in which image and text can interact above and beyond a conventional understanding of illustration.
The Free Museum of Dallas is proud to be participating in the Texas Biennial. More information on the Texas Biennial may be found at: www.texasbiennial.org.
